Real-Time Visibility for Resilient Multimodal Freight Operations
Real-time tracking · Predictive ETA · Transport transparency
Introduction
Real-time visibility across multimodal transport chains remains a major challenge due to fragmented data sources, limited transparency, and the lack of timely operational information. The PTV Real Time Visibility Suite in Remunet addresses this challenge by providing continuous tracking, monitoring, and event management capabilities for transport operations. The solution enables logistics stakeholders to obtain real-time information about shipment status, estimated arrival times, delays, and disruption events for road transport networks. By improving visibility and situational awareness throughout the supply chain, the platform supports proactive decision-making, enhances coordination between stakeholders, and contributes to more resilient, efficient, and sustainable transport operations.
About PTV Group
PTV Group is a leading provider of software solutions for transport planning, logistics optimisation, and mobility management. Within the ReMuNet project, PTV contributed advanced real-time visibility and transport monitoring capabilities. PTV’s role focused on enabling transparent and resilient transport operations by integrating real-time shipment tracking, event monitoring, and predictive ETA services. These capabilities support collaborative logistics processes, improve operational responsiveness, and strengthen the service stack to manage road disruptions and include them to complex decsion making processes across multimodal supply chains.
PTV’s role withing ReMuNet
PTV addressed the building block “road transport” for the challenge of limited real-time visibility and insufficient coordination across complex multimodal transport networks. Logistics stakeholders often face fragmented information flows, inconsistent tracking data, and delayed communication between transport operators, shippers, and infrastructure stakeholders. These operational barriers reduce transparency and make it difficult to react efficiently to disruptions, delays, or changing network conditions.
Another key challenge involved integrating heterogeneous real-time data sources from different transport modes, telematics providers, and logistics systems into a unified operational view. Ensuring reliable ETA predictions and disruption monitoring while maintaining scalability and interoperability represented important technical challenges. From a resilience perspective, the solution needed to support proactive disruption management and improved situational awareness. Sustainability concerns also required more efficient transport execution and reduced empty mileage or waiting times. PTV therefore focused on delivering an integrated real-time visibility solution that improves operational transparency, supports collaboration, and enables faster and better-informed decision-making for all stakeholders.
Challenge addressed
The Real Time Visibility Suite demonstrator act as component within the ReMuNet Platform. The solution provides the trucking mode real-time shipment tracking , transport monitoring, predictive ETA calculation, event management, and disruption notification capabilities. The platform enables stakeholders to continuously monitor transport execution and gain transparency across the entire transport chain.
The solution works by collecting and processing real-time telematics, vehicle position data, transport execution, and operational event data from multiple systems and logistics partners. Advanced analytics and predictive algorithms are used to calculate estimated arrival times, detect deviations from planned operations, and identify potential disruption risks. Users can access transport status information, alerts, and operational insights through a shared collaborative interface of the demonstrator.
For end-users and stakeholders, the solution provides improved transparency, better ETA reliability, faster incident response, and enhanced collaboration across supply chain actors. It reduces manual communication effort, supports more efficient transport execution, and enables data-driven operational decision-making for resilient and sustainable logistics operations.
Solution
The Real Time Visibility Suite was successfully demonstrated within a real world testing phase. It demonstrated the value of real-time transport visibility and predictive monitoring in the field together with the project partner Danish Red Cross. The demonstration proved the value of operational transparency by enabling stakeholders to continuously monitor shipment status, transport progress, and disruption events across collaborative transport networks. Enhanced ETA prediction and event management capabilities supported faster operational responses and more informed decision-making during dynamic transport situations.
Outcomes and next steps
The demonstration test has been successfully conducted in the greater Copenhagen area and delivered real operational feedback.
The solution as such contributes to more sustainable transport execution by supporting optimized operations and reducing inefficiencies caused by disruptions or lack of visibility.
