As part of ReMuNet’s broader commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient multimodal transport across Europe, we are pleased to highlight a synergistic initiative that shares similar goals: the IBA-CRISTAL project – Climate Knowledge for Resilient Transport and Logistics in the Baltic Region.
Led by the Finnish Meteorological Institute – a partner also involved in the ReMuNet project – IBA-CRISTAL focuses on helping transport and logistics actors in the Baltic Sea region better prepare for and adapt to the growing impacts of climate change. With weather patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable and extreme, the project addresses an urgent need for actionable climate intelligence in the transport sector.
Running from December 2024 to December 2026 and funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, IBA-CRISTAL aims to:
- Improve the operational security and crisis resilience of transport networks in the Baltic Sea region
- Increase understanding among transport system actors regarding the risks and consequences of climate change for transport infrastructure and services
- Strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to manage climate-related risks more effectively
The project generates tailored, easy-to-use indicators related to weather and climate conditions, enabling more informed decision-making among logistics providers, infrastructure managers, and transport service operators. Furthermore, it explores the strengths and limitations of different climate databases in developing these indicators, ultimately contributing to a clearer understanding of how future weather changes may affect transport conditions.
A central feature of the project is its close engagement with stakeholders across the region. Through this dialogue, IBA-CRISTAL ensures that the information it produces is both relevant and practical for those working within the transport ecosystem.
Ongoing survey on weather impacts: To further this engagement and ensure that stakeholder perspectives shape the project’s outcomes, IBA-CRISTAL is currently conducting a survey focused on the impact of weather events on transport operations in the Baltic region.
This survey invites responses from professionals across the transport and logistics sectors, aiming to collect insights on how weather conditions affect daily operations, planning, and long-term resilience. The results will inform the development of better forecasting tools, early warning systems, and infrastructure planning approaches to meet the challenges posed by a changing climate.
Participation takes approximately 15 minutes. All responses are anonymous, confidential, and used solely for research purposes.
